LFT support to the victims of the flooding in Derna, Libya

In the early hours of last Sunday, large dams in the areas surrounding Derna burst and completely flooded the city at 3am whilst populations were asleep.

More than 10,000 people are reported dead and many more reported missing.

Large swathes of Derna were destroyed in scenes reminiscent of a war zone. In the valleys surrounding surrounding Derna have split the town into two zones that cannot be connected. Our aid efforts need to be mindful of this.

The residents or Derna rely on water from boreholes and now the water is highly contaminated and survivors showing signs of water borne diseases like cholera.

Five hospitals in the city have been destroyed including a neo natal unit that was drowned with small bodies surfacing over the past days.

Lots of survivors have been evacuated to nearby areas and are being made comfortable in neighbouring schools and other public buildings and homes.

In disasters lots of people need closure so families can have their missing people accounted for.

Food relief supply chains need 10-15 tonnes of food daily to all areas surrounding Derna and keeping the survivors safe and giving them closure.

Please do continue to support the work of the LFT in Derna at this critical juncture.
